We arrived in Fukuoka, Japan via hydrofoil from Pusan, Korea around midday and were greeted by a steady, cold rain. After a taxi ride into the bustling district called Tenjin, we wandered briefly through a dizzying Western-style shopping mall before heading off for the small town of Dazaifu via a sparkling-clean commuter train.
Located about 30 minutes' train ride southeast of Fukuoka, Dazaifu is home to a few historical and religious sights, as well as the only inexpensive youth hostel in the area. By the time we reached the town, the rain was intermittent and the surrounding mountains were shrouded in beautiful, mysterious, thick fog. We made our way to Tenmangu Shrine, the burial place of a poet and scholar who later came to be deified as a god of culture and scholarship. Here are five shots taken around the grounds there. |
